The plays described below are all for mixed casts of young people and they can be used in a variety of ways – from selecting scenes of dialogue for reading in class or workshops - to full-scale, mounted productions. All lend themselves to being either filmed or staged. Directors are free to use the material in their own way, adapting it suit their needs.

Title 1: Hard Youth

Length: approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.

Cast: minimum 6 speaking, optional extras

Synopsis

Four friends, Jess, Adam, Steve and Aaron, find their lives gradually changed by the appearance of a newcomer to their town. He is Justin Daggers, working as a porter in the local hospital. Unknown to the others, Justin has personal reasons which have festered since childhood, to take his revenge on the man responsible for his mother’s death. This man is Jess’s father. Having tracked down where he lives, he contrives to make himself known to Jess, who us flattered by his charms and becomes attracted to him. This causes tensions as Steve is in love with Jess. He, Adam and Aaron become suspicious of Justin’s motives and start to make discreet enquiries about him. The learn something which gives them cause to worry for Jess’s safety. She refuses to heed their warnings and thinks they are solely motivated by jealousy. The relationship between Jess and Justin deepens and he plans to take her away for a weekend as a birthday treat. By this time, the others have discovered enough to realise Jess is in real danger. In a race against time, the police being notified, they discover the couple’s whereabouts and rush to save her before everything reaches a dramatic climax on the hotel balcony.

Title 2: Wanted Blood

Length: Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes

Cast: Minimum 6 speaking, optional extras

Synopsis

This play was devised principally as a screenplay, although could also be staged. It concerns a conflict between good and evil vampires. The evil vampire King Danny has reasons to hate good vampire Ben and threatens to kill his children unless he agrees to come over to the other side and join him and his evil forces. Ben has no option and agrees, but secretly plans to find his estranged children and explain why he had to abandon them. Meanwhile the children, Nathan, Dean and Laura, now in their teens are fending for themselves. Dean is autistic and often confused. Nathan and Laura are very protective of him. Chris, one of Danny’s vampires, has been given the task of concealing his true identity and becoming a friend of the young brothers and sister in order to win their confidence in preparation for their eventual capture to the other side. The story moves between the two sides with a variety of twists and turns. Things are not resolved in a predictable solution of good triumphing over evil and the audience is leftwondering who are the real wrong-doers.

Title 3: OBSESSION

Length: approximately 45 minutes

Cast: 8 speaking, optional extras

Synopsis

Obsession is a one-act play for a small cast. It could easily be adapted into a musical. Lyrics are included for groups who wish to set them to music. It is the story of a young girl Nicola who, as a result of an accident, is confined to a wheelchair. She finds it difficult to cope with the changes that this brings about in her life. She is passionate about pop music and is obsessed with the members of a famous group. Her family try to wean her away from this as they feel it is unhealthy and that she is wasting her life shut in her room for hours on end listening to them. She has a mind of her own and decides to send a demo of her own singing to the group. It comes to them at a time when their own fortunes are waning and, as they like her voice, decide to invite her to meet them. She does so, but they are shocked to find she is disabled. The group become divided in their views about her. Two think that taking her on board could be the re- making of them, but the others feel it would be a disaster. The group splits and she is accepted by those who rate her. However, Nicola’s obsession with the group leader Matt causes tensions and things do not progress well. He suggests that she has some voice training and introduces her to a professional voice coach of his acquaintance. This leads to an unexpected change in the lives of all concerned.

Title 4: THE WHISTLEBLOWER

Length: 35 minutes (approx)

Cast: 13 speaking parts, with optional extras

Synopsis

 ....a tense new exciting one-act play for young actors

Four young people, Lee, Hayley, Laura and Alex meet up for the first time after ten years. They were all brought up together in the same care home by foster parents Marie and Peter Murray, who later closed the home, following the death of their twelve-year old son, Ben from what was believed to be suicide. The reason for the meeting of the four is to discuss the news just published giving new evidence that throws a different light on the original verdict of Ben’s death. There is obviously a serious issue of their involvement.
